The Pay It Forward Scholarship is a concept brought to the Writers’ Community of Durham Region by one of its board members, Phil Dwyer.

Here is a message from Phil about the scholarship:

How does it work?

When you take a copy, you agree to make a donation to WCDR’s Pay It Forward scholarship fund. The minimum suggested donation is $10, but you can give more if you’re feeling particularly generous towards your fellow writers, had a big lottery win, or have recently robbed a bank.

 What happens to the money?

Every year, the WCDR awards a number of scholarships to its members, to allow them improve their writing craft and pursue their writing goals. These awards are made to writers who demonstrate talent, passion and a willingness to improve and develop as writers. Typically, members will use their scholarship money to attend conferences or writing workshops.

 What happens to the book?

When you’re done with it, hand it back in at a WCDR breakfast, or drop it off at Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge, so that someone else can read it and give. It all adds up.

How long can you keep it?

To keep the money rolling in, we’d love it if you’d finish the book and return it to circulation within a month. If you don’t, we won’t send large men with baseball bats to wrest it from your fingers. But beware of Karma.

~Phil Dwyer, Secretary for the Writers’ Community of Durham Region
